As many as 30,000 Albertans are currently managing an eating disorder.

That startling fact comes from Alberta Health Services as they promote National Eating Disorders Awareness Week, which runs until February 7th.

According to Dr. Jorge Pinzon, Pediatrician of Adolescent Medicine at the Alberta Children's Hospital, eating disorders affect mostly adolescent girls.

"The ratio is one male to every ten females who have disorders like Anorexia Nervosa," says Dr. Pinzon, "It's the third most common chronic problem behind obesity and asthma among adolescent women.  We don't know why people develop eating disorders, but there are biological factors relating to the temperament and personality of the individual, psychological issues and societal factors."

The influence of western culture and the media may also factor in to the development of the disorders, according to Dr. Pinzon

He says the most important thing to do for someone you know who might be suffering with an eating disorder is to listen to them, be respectful of their body type and don't comment on their looks or try to shame them into being different.

He also says to seek help.  Your family physician is a good place to start, and Airdrie Mental Health can also provide valuable assistance.  Help is also available if you or someone you know is struggling with an eating disorder you can get more information by calling Health Link at 811 or Access Mental Health at 403 943-1500.
