An Airdrie family was stunned when a coyote attacked their dog earlier this month.

The family from Woodside Crescent say the coyote jumped their fence and started biting the family dog.

Thankfully, the dog only suffered bite marks, but it's left the family feeling uneasy that a wild animal would venture into their neighbourhood in the middle of the day.

The City of Airdrie says that RCMP received a call about the attack, which was forwarded to Alberta Fish and Wildlife.

A representative for the department says prior to the incident in Woodside, there's been no other complaints of coyotes attacking pets within City limits.

There are some steps that Fish and Wildlife recommend to prevent such incidents, including clearing clutter from your backyard and keeping your pet, especially cats, inside.

If you see a coyote or any other wild animal in the city, you're asked to call the Report a Poacher line at 1-800-642-3800.
