February is Distracted Driving Awareness Month in Alberta.

Cst. Mike Hibbs with the RCMP said despite hefty fines, distracted driving numbers are still high in the province.

"Just last year, 2016, the RCMP Integrated Traffic Units in Alberta, we issued 6,051 tickets for distracted driving."

Hibbs said Distracted Driving Awareness Month is intended as an educational piece for the public on the dangers of distracted driving. Hibbs hopes drivers will take the message to heart and stay safe on the roads.

"You have to be very vigilant while driving. By using your cell phone or any other distraction in the vehicle, that will take away from you having a good day by being involved in a collision or talking to one of us on the side of the road."
