Yesterday afternoon (March 6), Airdrie Firefighters responded to reports of a natural gas leak in the 400 block of Bayview Way.

At the scene, crews determined that a gas line had been damaged when a worker struck it with a hand shovel while digging a trench.

Deputy Chief Garth Rabel said that the area is not highly populated, and fire crews were able to quickly evacuate five surrounding houses for four hours. Fire crews remained on the scene while ATCO got the leak under control, establishing a water supply to ensure the safety of the workers.

No injuries were reported.
