You might not know that there are strict rules in Airdrie around fireworks.

Deputy Fire Chief Garth Rabel explained that the use or possession of fireworks governed by the Emergency Services Bylaw and is strictly prohibited in Airdrie.

"Fireworks are not legal within the municipal boundaries of Airdrie or within Rocky View County. That being said, there are municipalities that do sell and allow fireworks, but Rocky View County and the City of Airdrie are not two of those municipalities."

Only the Airdrie Parade & Fireworks Committee is allowed to set off fireworks in the City, as they obtain all the proper permits and work closely with the fire department to ensure safety.

Rabel said there are things you can do if you see someone setting off illegal fireworks in the City.

"If you're concerned about the public welfare, if you're concerned about your property or adjacent properties, than you should be phoning the 911 system and activate either police or fire service and we'll attend and review and see what's going on there and take the appropriate action."

Rabel explained that it is especially important to follow the bylaw right now, as Airdrie sits under a fire advisory due to dry conditions.

"We have an advisory. People are very responsible in Airdrie right now. They're taking care of their backyard fire pits, they're not doing anything that's going to put anybody at risk. Fireworks are just one more way that we can experience uncontrolled fires and they can lead to some really alarming outcomes."

Rabel said the recent rainfall has not brought sufficient moisture to combat dryness in our area.
