Some local heroes gave back to the community at a time when they need it most.

The Airdrie Professional Firefighters Association donated $1000 to the Airdrie Lioness Club Christmas Hamper Program on December 14th.

Local Firefighter Tom Jukes explains why this charity was important ot them.

"It's funds going to families directly into the community we know need stuff this time of year. So it was a great opportunity for us to get involved and we were really happy that we could do something that directly affects the community."

So how did these firefighters raise the money to give to the Lioness.

"We had an extra Barbecue in our possession that we had as a potential replacement if we needed one for one of the halls...we're at the point where we know we're not going to need it. We decided to do an internal raffle just within our members. So we raised $700 doing that and then we donated $300 directly from the Association fund to make it an even thousand."

The firefighter who won the raffle for the BBQ decided to donate it to the Ronald McDonald House, just days after their own BBQ broke down.
