Does this ever happen to you?: The organics you put in your green bin are a little wet, the cold weather causes them to stick to the sides of your bin, and then your bin is not completely emptied on collection day.

Tracy Pagenhardt, Program Coordinator with Waste and Recycling at the City of Airdrie, says the problem is actually quite common due to fluctuations in the weather.. Luckily, there is a simple solution.

"You can put a layer of newspaper or pizza boxes on the bottom, and then you can put in your wet organics and then do another layer of the dry organics. What that newspaper and cardboard does is it absorbs that moisture, and it helps keep things from sticking to the sides and the bottom of the cart."

If you're willing to shell out a little cash, you can also buy compostable paper bags for your under-the-sink bin, which will also absorb any wetness from your organics. You can also fold an origami catcher from newspaper, which accomplishes the same thing while also reusing recyclable materials.
