The Airdrie Rotary Community Kitchen, an initiative by the Airdrie Food Bank, opened its doors to the community for an open house on January 24.

According to coordinator Meghan West, the community kitchen was envisioned as a place where Airdronians could come to learn some cooking skills, but she also had more in mind.

"The bigger piece of it that we are trying to focus on is the connections that can be made when you cook with others."

West said that the initiative will hopefully help Airdrie see the food bank as not only an emergency support, but an integral place to form a long-term support system.

"It's a chance for people with similar interests to meet other people in the community and build that web of connections that they have so that if they fall into hard times, they have more and more people to call and count on."

West said that the open house contributes to that goal by allowing residents to actually see for themselves what the community kitchen is all about, and hopefully pique their interest.
