Gas prices at many stations throughout the city have reached 133.9 cents per litre.

Dan McTeague, Senior Petroleum Analyst for Gas Buddy said there is a handful of contributing factors to the jump at the pumps including upgrading at local refineries.

"The increase is likely due to the fact that two refineries in Edmonton are going through maintenance and repairs as well as another upgrade that seems to be adding lift to the prices."

With those refineries being the only ones in Alberta feeding the pumps with the refined product, the province was bound to see an increase as it does almost regularly this time of year.

Over the past few weeks, the price of oil has also increased, contributing to the rise of the fuel price.

"All of those combined means that gas retailers are buying their gas at 1.23 per litre," says McTeague, "the difference between the 123 and the 133 is what's known as the retail margin. That's likely to come down four or five cents a litre as it always does but generally, that means that the price of  wholesale price gasoline has gone up 5 or 6 cents alone this week"

The average price of gas in Alberta is currently 127.9.
