The Aquatic Centre at Genesis Place is closed today (September 5) due to a major contamination.

Manager Greg Lockert explained that the tot pool and the lane pool were closed shortly after 2:00pm yesterday because of the contamination. Those are the only two bodies of water currently available at the Aquatic Centre, as the rest of the pools undergo work to bring them up to new safety standards.

"The nice part about the tot pool is that it's something we can drain and clean and get right back to ourselves. The lane pool had to be treated and will take 24 hours to return back to a level for use again."

Lockert said that they will get the tot pool and lane pool open as soon as the cleaning process is complete.

"What happens in a situation like that is bring the chlorine levels way up and then we have to bring them back down to the standard level again to remove the contaminants from the pool. We're just working on circulating the water through and that can only happen as fast as the system can do it."

Lockert said they anticipate opening the pools at 5:00pm tonight, and will notify the public if that changes for any reason. Anyone inquiring about the status of the pools can phone Genesis Place for an update.

The contamination will have no effect on the ongoing work in the Aquatic Centre. Lockert said they will try to fill the dive tank and hot tub in the next few days so they can get a water sample to Alberta Health Services prior to reopening those pools.
