Every year, the community rallies to gather donations for the Airdrie Food Bank around the holidays.

With a higher need than ever, residents are reminded of the best ways that they can help feed our hungry families.

"We are grateful for everything that's donated to the food bank, at Christmas time in particular we get 70 per cent of our non-perishables donated that last us all year," said Lori McRitchie, Executive Director, Airdrie Food Bank.

Canned food items are an easy way to get a donation out but are they really the best option? According to the Food Bank, they can do a lot more with cash or gift card donations thanks to their buying power with local grocers.

The Airdrie Food Bank also reminds residents that if you wouldn't eat it yourself, consider a different donation. Expired and obscure food items do not make it into the hampers.

"We have a box of items that we call our archives, believe it or not, we have soup from 1982 that has been donated in the past couple of months, turtle soup, and even dried eel," said McRitchie.

You can always check the Airdrie Food Bank website for a list of what is needed. With the holidays around the corner, items like turkey, ham, and chicken are in high demand.
