Winds that gusted to over 40 kmh from the north and the west have made for treacherous conditions on southern Alberta roads according to the RCMP.

Last night (February 23) the Airdrie RCMP were advising motorists to use extreme caution when travelling.  Constable Cassandra Greene said that high winds were causing blowing snow which led to icy roads and poor driving conditions.

The RCMP and Alberta Sheriffs were called to multiple collisions due to the wintery conditions.

Greene said that motorists should avoid Range Road 11 between Highway 566 and Airdrie as it was in particularly poor shape.

Just before 9:00 pm last night, a motor vehicle collision on southbound QE II near Balzac brought out emergency crews causing delays for drivers.

RCMP from Cochrane were also warning of roads in that area saying that they too had been dispatched to several collisions.

While conditions in our area haven't been great, they've been far better than in the deep south of the province.  A winter storm in the Pincher Creek area caused Highway 3 to be closed from Pincher Station to Fort Macleod overnight.

The highway has now reopened as of 7:00 am this morning.  However, 511alberta says anyone travelling in the area should expect reduced width on Highway 3 because of snow plows working and visibility in the area remains reduced.
