When Hurricane Matthew struck the island of Haiti, it hit hard for one Airdrie man.

Marc Honrat was born in Haiti, and escaped hardship thanks to sponsors when he was younger.

Since then, he and his wife Lisa have dedicated their lives to helping those back home through his organization Haiti Arise.

"That's my home, where I grew up, where I was born, and that's the main reason I went back from Canada to Haiti, to help the people." said Honrat.

Matthew has killed at least 100 people as it traveled through Haiti on it's way through the Atlantic.

According to Honrat, many people in Haiti are still without homes after the earthquakes of 2010, making the damage of a hurricane that much harder to endure.

Haiti Arise has a base in Haiti, with leaders working year round. The hurricane delayed their efforts, as they were trapped due to heavy winds, rain, and flooding.

"They are in need of food, so we are going to distribute food, and also health care." said Honrat.
