Family violence in Canada shows that cases involving children and youth from 2009-2017 are decreasing, but more and more cases of abuse toward seniors from family members rose.
From 2009-2017 there was a 7% increase in police-reported cases of abuse involving elderly citizens. The rates of child and youth cases dropped by 7% and abuse towards partners dropped by 14%, but cases of family violence are incredibly difficult to track due to unreported cases.
Senior women were found more likely to be a victim in reported cases with a 70% of cases being linked.
63% of the cases involved physical abuse.
