Airdrie Fire responded to a call of a garage fire around 6:19 p.m last night in the 200 block of Tanner Drive SE.

When the crew arrived on scene they found a double detached garage in the back of the property fully engulfed in flames. The houses beside the residence were evacuated due to the extreme heat and fire conditions. Firefighters attacked the outside of the garage with water streams to protect nearby exposed areas. Once the fire was extinguished fire crews remained on scene to make sure the fire had not extended to nearby properties.

Deputy Chief Garth Rable said that the incident could have been worse but the weather was co-operating.

"Weather conditions were favorable for the crews, we did get some icing after the fact as it did get cold:"

Fortis Alberta and ATCO emergency crew shut down the gas and electricity to the area immediately to prevent further damage to nearby properties.

Firefighters continuously monitored the air quality of homes near the fire to make sure the area was safe before restoring utilities to the area.

There we no injuries reported.

The cause of the fire has not been determined and remains under investigation.
