Alberta Health Services used this past week to raise awareness of the danger of kids falling out of windows this summer.

Lead Medical Officer from the Calgary Zone, Dr. David Strong says he's seen many incidents of kids falling through open windows.

"Last year there was 175 children that were brought to emergency departments in Alberta with injuries related to falling through a window or balcony"

Dr. Strong says the risk is always there regardless of whether you live a 2 story house or an apartment or condo complex.

Of course there are some simple ways to make sure your child is safe if a window needs to be opened because of the heat.

"This time of year, when it's summer, people who are wanting to open their windows, bring fresh air into the house. Take some precautions, look at the window space, check to see that there's no furniture such as cribs or stools, anything that the child can climb on."

Dr. Strong also says to be careful if your window has a screen as those can easily pop off, recommending instead a proper window guard.
