The students from Windsong Heights Elementary school might not be in class right now due to school closures, but they are still busy spreading kindness throughout Airdrie.

A project from their teachers has seen them painting rainbows with messages of hope and displaying them in windows, doors and even balconies at their homes for their neighbours to see.

“Kids all over Italy were creating rainbows to hang in their windows with the phrase ‘Andrà tutto bene’ which translates to everything will be alright, this started to spread really quickly through Italy and it was helping them hare a message of unity and hope during hard times,” Teacher Lindsey Wlasuk explained. “We thought it might be something we wanted to bring to Airdrie.

Wlasuk said the changes that have happened over the last few weeks have likely been hard for kids to process. It’s an unprecedented situation that may have left some kids feeling anxious and uncertain. She said this project aims to help them look for the rainbows in the midst of the storm surrounding COVID-19.

“I think it’s really good for kids to participate in,” she said. “Just remembering they can be part of a message of positivity and share that optimism with others.”

Wlasuk said the Kindness Ninjas would like to see the entire city take up the movement and paint rainbows to put in their windows to let their neighbours know they aren’t alone in these trying times.

“We’d love to see more communities adopt this and if you have kids at home it’s a great activity to do,” said Wlasuk.
