Five-year-old Sutton Monroe Wright of Airdrie placed first the pageant on February 16.

The Little Miss category of 2019 was for girls aged five to ten and Sutton, the youngest of twelve contestants, earned first place. Besides the big win, she also won Best Evening Gown and Most Photogenic. Sutton is the first five-year-old to hold the title and is the youngest person ever in the pageant. The Miss Calgary Pageant System ranges from age five to 60.

"The pageant helps girls to gain a sense of community, improve public speaking skills, their learning self-esteem, confidence, determination, leadership skills," explains Nicole Kelly, Sutton's mother. "They will go throughout the year and attend local events while representing their local community and supporting causes that they have chosen themselves."

Sutton has personally chosen to support the issue of local homelessness and explains how she will be helping.

"Helping people when they're sick by signing up for making soup and giving jackets and then helping the homeless people."

She will be collecting tangible items like jackets and hats and will be volunteering her day on March 6 with BeTheChangeYYC, a non-profit group, to make lunches and then join the team in handing out the food and collected items to the homeless.

Her parents are proud of Sutton's achievement and happy to have her representing the Airdrie community as Little Miss Calgary 2019.

"To watch her on stage, her confidence just shines and we're just so excited for her to have such a big opportunity to do the things that she loves and grow in her community," her mother shares.
