A local man has received one of Canada's highest honours, the Sovereign's Medal for volunteerism.

Sargeant At Arms of the Legion, Bob McNevin was at City Council last night to be given the award by Mayor Peter Brown.

The Sovereign's Medal recognizes exceptional volunteerism throughout the country. For a person to receive the award they must have made significant, sustained and unpaid contributions to their community.

McNevin is well known throughout the community for many contributions including his role in putting the LAV III (light armoured vehicle) on display outside of the Nose Creek Valley Museum.

McNevin was able to lead the charge for the LAV III when he was the president of the Royal Canadian Legion In Airdrie.
