Some local RCMP detachments got in on the action this week, helping the Sundre RCMP in recovering thousands of dollars in stolen property from a rural property near the Town of Sundre.

The Sundre Mounties got assistance from RCMP detachments from Olds and Didsbury, along with the Airdrie based Southern Alberta Crime Reduction Unit, the RCMP Police Dog Service and the Auto Theft Unit in executing a search warrant at a rural property in Mountain View County east of Sundre where police seized the stolen property.

On Tuesday (April 21) of this week, Sundre RCMP got a report of a theft from an oil well lease site east of the community where a 12V battery that powers monitoring equipment was stolen,  The company rep was alerted by their security monitoring equipment and called police.  A rural property nearby, that police say is known for criminality was suspected and the RCMP conducted patrols in the area.

The next morning, Sundre RCMP were visually monitoring the rural residence when a pickup truck was seen leaving the property.  Police attempted to pull the truck over but it refused and fled the scene but not before police were able to determine the truck had been stolen from the Olds area the previous day.

Police members went to the residence and observed two RV trailers on the property.  From there they obtained a judicial authorization to search the residence and property.  Police did so and recovered, not only the stolen battery but also several stolen trailers and off-highway vehicles (OHV).

With help from the Police Dog Service, two people were found hiding in the house and were taken into custody without incident.  The homeowner wasn't located.

Some of the stolen property that was seized included:

  • A 2019 40-foot Montana Fifth-Wheel trailer
  • A 2012 34-foot Rockwood RV trailer
  •  A 20-foot double-axle flat deck trailer
  • A Mirage utility trailer loaded with worksite tools and equipment
  • A Look utility trailer loaded with worksite tools and equipment
  • An Argo Amphibious trailer
  • A Yamaha Rhino OHV

Police are in the process of connecting the registered owners of the property.  The items that were recovered were stolen from Strathmore, Crossfield, and Sundre areas.

The matter is being investigated but Sundre RCMP say charges are pending against the homeowner and four individuals, including a 17-year-ole female young offender.
