With the coming of winter, the construction site on Main Street in front of Shoppers Drug Mart is coming to an end for the year.

The project started in order to remediate the landfill underneath the street and has been blocking lanes for drivers in the Airdrie. However, it looks like soon the northbound lanes will be opening back up.

Project Manager Adam Carroll says the roads should be clear soon.

"The Project is scheduled to wrap up for the season in about 7 to 10 days and they will be back in the spring to finish the work. Right now we've completed the waste removal in the two north bound lanes and in the spring they will be back to complete the waste removal of the two south bound lanes."

However, the recent snowfall has made working conditions a little more difficult. Although not a giant problem, the wet runoff has made it important to take a bit more time.

"It makes the job site wet," explains Carrol. "They have to accommodate for the water run off that enters into the excavation site because there is contaminated soil and there's municipal solid waste in there so they actually take that water and treat it before releasing it into the storm system. It slows things down a little bit, but the contractor is doing their due diligence in keeping the site safe"

Until the roads are completely clear, Carrol says drivers must remain aware.

"Just drive cautiously. that's all that we really can say. the traffic accommodation strategies are in place, the signs, the message boards, the candlesticks, the pylons, they're all out there for a reason. The speed has been reduced to thirty. We just ask that everybody just drive with caution and due diligence and ensure that they are keeping themselves safe as well as the people working out on the site. We want to keep our contractors safe as well."
