Last Thursday (June 29), British Columbia welcomed their new premier, less than two months after the province's election.

The ruling Liberal party lost a non-confidence vote to the NDP-Green Party coalition, paving the way for John Horgan of the NDP to take power.

Here in Alberta, Premier Rachel Notley offered her congratulations to Premier Designate Horgan saying that the two provinces "are bound together by deep personal and economic ties and a commitment to building strong communities with good jobs, strong public services and a clean environment."

"I look forward to working with him and his new government to advance our shared interests," concluded Notley.

While many are congratulating the NDP win, others are skeptical given the party's opposition to pipeline projects.

Airdrie's Wayne Lodge sent this statement to Discover Airdrie sharing his concern with the new coalition government in BC.

"The downturn in the energy sector is unfortunate but when you work in an cyclical industry you have to be prepared for the low end and be prepared to diversify into maintenance or commercial type work. In regards to the BC coalition, they have to understand that it's not just their province their support but the entire country. Projects like that employ a large number of Canadians from all across the country. While they've enjoyed the spoils of their tax payers working in Alberta it's time to do their part for the good of the entire country."

The BC Liberals had been in power since 2001, when they toppled the previous BC NDP Government in that year's election.

This new NDP government will be sworn in at a soon to be determined date.
