The Government of Alberta will soon put Bill 9 into action, which is good news for Airdrie's MLA.

Angela Pitt, who serves as the Wildrose Shadow Minister for Justice, says the new measures are a step in the right direction and hopes the work will continue.

"We also need to ensure that we have appropriate levels of staffing for judges and for clerks and crown prosecutors. We'll take this as a step in the right direction."

Minister of Justice Kathleen Ganley introduced these new measures on April 24th, which include no arrests or jail time for minor infractions so that law enforcement can spend more time on violent offences.

Ganley said they will also introduce electronic ticketing to speed that process in the courts.

Pitt says she hasn't heard from Airdrie residents yet on the Bill but knows that many aren't happy with the justice system.

"I've heard a lot from people in Airdrie that are frustrated from some of the criminals that are getting caught, they're going to jail and then they're getting out the next day or the day of waiting to go to court. They're just becoming repeat offenders in this sense because no one's holding them accountable."

Bill 9 officially comes into effect across the Province on May 1st.
