Last week, Alberta's Education Minister ordered two religious schools in the province to adopt an LGBTQ Policy.

The schools in Edmonton and Calgary were vehemently against adopting the policy which requires allowing gay-straight alliances (GSA) to be established at a student's request, stating that it violated their rights as a religious institution.

Chestermere-Rocky View MLA Leela Aheer, who serves as the Shadow Minister for Education says the commotion over implementing these regulations was skewed.

"No school has actually broken the law yet. The GSA's, you have to have a student request one so if a student requests one then you go through the process of implementing that. There's been no students requesting them at these schools right now."

Aheer wishes that the dispute between the Minister and the schools was handled differently.

"Let's give everybody a bit of credit to have a reasonable discussion about this before it comes down to politicizing the children and the values of these schools and the values of Albertans."
