Banff-Airdrie MP Blake Richards is speaking out against a motion that was recently voted down by both the NDP and Liberal governments.

The motion was put forward by Conservative Rocky Ridge MP Pat Kelly as a way to strengthen the Taxpayer's Bill of Rights, by directing Parliament to study ways to create a legally enforceable duty of care from the Canada Revenue Agency to taxpayers.

A duty of care is a legal obligation which is imposed on an individual requiring adherence to a standard of reasonable care while performing any acts that could foreseeably harm others.

Richards said he is disappointed the NDP and Liberals voted against a motion, which he thinks is a no brainer.

"It's just making sure that CRA when they're dealing with Canadians, treats them fairly, treats them with adequate responsibility and care. It was simply just a motion to encourage that kind of effort to be made by the government, and obviously we can see where their intentions lie, it certainly isn't on the side of taxpayers, it seems to be on the side of bureaucracy."

Richards believes the Canadian Taxpayers Bill of Rights needs to be strengthened immediately, as wait times for services have skyrocketed in recent months.

"We've actually really seen in this last year since the Liberals came into power, a huge increase in terms of the length of time people are waiting to get responses from CRA on their files. Even my office, I've got someone in my office who is there to help people with their individual cases with Revenue Canada, and she is even experiencing frustration in trying to get a response. This is a time where this is needed more than ever, and it just shocks me that the Liberals and NDP would vote against such a measure."

If you are experiencing slow service from the CRA or another government agency, Richards said his office can help you, the office can be reached at:  blake@blakerichards or 1-800-667-0410.
