Students at George McDougall High School are giving back to the community through Stephen's Backpacks Society.

The drive is organized by the high school's leadership class and collects donations to pack into backpacks that are then distributed to children in need. Nancy McPhee, Executive Director with Stephen's Backpacks Society, applauds the effort the students are devoting to this cause.

"It's driven by the students. The leadership team in George McDougall are known for their incredible strength and organizational skills, and that's the excellent teaching they get that allows them to take the lead."

Besides helping those in need, McPhee says getting high school students involved with local charities is valuable and educational in its own right.

"When kids like this get involved with organizations such as ours and some of the other wonderful charities that are in Airdrie and in Calgary, I think that it really teaches them life lessons that will be with them forever."

McPhee says Stephen's Backpacks Society has a long history of partnering with George McDougall.
