Earlier this week, a group of George McDougall leadership students had the chance to take in the Alberta Student Leadership Conference.

The annual conference ran from May 28 to 30, and was hosted by Lacombe Composite High School. Teacher Diana Stapor said the conference was a great experience, with plenty of guest speakers and activities to drive home leadership lessons that her students have been learning all year.

Stapor said the conference is purposefully held late in the year, to not only drive home leadership skills that have been learned earlier, but also to start students thinking about the next school year.

"It's mostly designated for grade nine, ten and eleven students, so that they can bring back all the ideas, all the mixers, all the shared ideas that they've gathered throughout those days plus the new knowledge from these fabulous guest speakers."

Stapor took four grade nine students and three grade eleven students to the conference, with each one coming home with something that inspired them.

Grade 11 student Kayley Lloyd said she took the most from a talk by Olympian Cheryl Bernard on how our failures determine our future successes.

"In life, there's so many challenges that we face, and if you give up somewhere along the lines, you may miss out on certain opportunities and they could benefit you and your life."

Anna Bainbridge, also a Grade 11 student, said she is excited to take the lessons she learned and implement them at George McDougall.

"I definitely feel like spreading the word and teaching others the lessons we learned is really important, because a lot of people get caught up in the idea of leadership but don't really look at the purpose of it, so I feel that really getting people involved in it will definitely help in the school."

Students from Bert Church and W.H. Croxford also went to the conference, and Bert Church will host ASLC 2018, in collaboration with George McDougall.
