On Monday (March 6), City Council approved a memorial grove at the north end of Nose Creek Park to commemorate civic leaders.

Archie Lang, Manager of Parks and Public Works, clarified the scope of the grove.

"This is specifically for those volunteers that had, you could say I suppose, a higher level for a longer period of time, no less than fifteen years, on committees of Council."

In order to be recognized in the new grove, a nominated person must fulfill a number of criteria, mainly having served on a Council board, committee or commission for an extended period. Lang said Council approved this grove because another one already recognizes Airdrie volunteers.

"Council decided to leave it as is because we already have a volunteer memorial grove in the south part of Nose Creek Park."

In order for a civic leader that meets the criteria to be recognized, they must be nominated. The application process was approved by Council on Monday, and Lang said it is now open.

"What happens then is that nomination form will go to the Community Services Advisory Board and they will take a look at it. If they approve of that recognition for that particular person, than it will go from there to Council for approval."

Once Council has given its final approval, a memorial tree or bench will be placed in the grove. Lang said he wouldn't be surprised to see trees planted in the grove as early as this spring.
