A new Government survey designed to help with the change to the voting system isn't sitting well with a local politician.

Last week, the Federal Liberals released the online survey My Democracy, a move to gauge the public's opinion on electoral reform.

Banff-Airdrie MP Blake Richards said this new approach still misses the mark.

"It doesn't ask the real questions, and it's got all these vague questions about values. At the end of the day it's not a replacement for what they really should be doing which is getting the consent of the people through a referendum."

Richards has been pushing for a referendum on electoral reform since the Liberals mandated it in their campaign last year.

"If they're going to propose a change to the voting system, this is not going to replace the idea that you need to have a referendum so that people can have their say."

According to Richards, the survey presents itself as more of a Chatelaine or Buzz Feed quiz then a legitimate way to gather opinions on the voting system.
