Nearly three years after it was first introduced to the Alberta Legislature, a law on artificial tanning services will come into effect.

Starting January 1st 2018, youth under the age of 18 will no longer be allowed to use artificial tanning services such as UV beds.

Under the new rules, tanning businesses can't advertise UV tanning to minors and are required to post health warnings and restrictions.

Health Minister Sarah Hoffman says these new rules are designed to help reduce the risk of melanoma from UV tanning for those under 35.

"Research has shown that using artificial tanning when you are under 35 dramatically increases your risk for melanoma," says Hoffman, "The changes we’re making will help protect our youth from a disease that affects hundreds of Albertans every year."

Many businesses including some in Airdrie have already rules against minors using their products in place.
