It's not all positive with the weather turning around. Residents of Airdrie have noticed pets being left in unattended vehicles.

With the high of 23°C, it can reach 40°C in your car within a half an hour according to the Calgary Humane Society.

Some concerned citizens may need to take matters into their own hands if the situation is dire but Executive Director of the Cochrane Humane Society Tracy Keith says you need to know the laws and more importantly call the authorities.

"Citizens mean to do well, they're just concerned about the animal. We don't want them getting in trouble by breaking windows and doing those sort of things if it can be avoided. Call the police and or bylaw as soon as possible."

Animal health technologist Christina Holland encourages everyone to leave their pets at home.

"You don't want to be leaving them in the car at all ultimately. Just leave them at home honestly, they're safer there. They're in their home environment already. They will be a lot happier there, rather than risking something tragic."

Holland says there have been no serious cases of hyperthermia yet this summer but expects that to change.

"Every year without fail, every summer we get 2,3 maybe 5 pets come in where the owner says they were at home or they were even in the backyard and they were in direct sun and I think he's not himself and then we take that temperature and sure enough they're far too warm."

Hyperthermia can be fatal for your pets so industry professionals recommend that you always leave your pets at home.
