Despite bitterly cold temperatures forecast for tonight (December 31), the New Year's Eve fireworks display is on at Ed Eggerer Athletic Park in Airdrie.

All you can really do about the weather is laugh, and that's exactly what Lynn Kehoe of the Airdrie Parade and Fireworks Committee does as she announces that the fireworks are a go.

"Yes, they are!  We're asking people to just bundle up and come out and enjoy it.  They're quick, only 15 minutes, so it should be good."

Kehoe says the fireworks will happen at the park which is located behind Genesis Place starting at 6:30 pm.  The fireworks will be set off from East Lake and people can either watch from the stands or the track.

Earlier in the week, the Parade and Fireworks committee received news that a group of volunteers wouldn't be able to make it for the fireworks so an appeal was put out to find more.  Kehoe says while they have sufficient volunteers now, they wouldn't mind a few more helpers.

"Most of the committee and spouses are helping out so we have enough but we're also happy if somebody can step up at the last minute.  They could just go online to our website and email us if they'd like to volunteer."

Kehoe explains that the fireworks are sponsored by the City of Airdrie and Tim Horton's who will have a truck on site serving coffee and hot chocolate to warm folks up.  The Santa Claus Parade sponsors also help pay for the display, which Kehoe says costs $1,000 per minute to put on.

"We're hoping lots of people will brave the cold and come out an enjoy it," says Kehoe.
