Canmore RCMP are investigating after the death of a climber yesterday (August 9).

A rescue operation was initiated Kananaskis Public Safety after they received reports of an injured hiker. A group of four hikers were decending the Middle Sister mountain near Canmore when one fell and suffered serious injuries. During the rescue, it was discovered that the climber had succumbed to his injuries. The remaining climbers were rescued from the area.

Sgt. Ryan Currie with Canmore RCMP said it's important to know and understand hazards in the backcountry.

"In general, ensure you're well equipped to deal with the terrain you're going into and ensure you have an understanding of what you may require to recreate in those areas and that there are natural consistant hazards."

Currie also said RCMP the investigation is ongoing.

"Right now we still don't know the technical mechanism that took place that resulted in the fall and we're working with the coroner's office - the medical examiners office - to ensure that everything's investigated and that we can determine a cause of the accident"
