Starting tomorrow (November 1), the bi-weekly organics collection will take effect.

Susan Grimm, Team Leader with Waste and Recycling at the City of Airdrie, explained that even though the winter pickup schedule starts tomorrow, collectors will pick up every green bin in the City for the rest of the week. Starting next week, organic collection will happen every two weeks. Grimm said the group of communities that normally have a pickup on a given day will be split for the winter.

"Each community is split. So for example, if your collection is Monday, half of Monday's collection will be picked up one week, and the other half of Monday's collection will be picked up the other week. They're alternating as a way to keep efficiencies with having the collectors running all week."

Grimm said the best way to find out when your green bin will be emptied is to check the pickup schedule on the City's website. You can also sign up for text or email reminders through your MyAirdrie account.

"On there, you can select how and when you are notified for your waste, organics and recycling collection. It'll also provide you with opportunities, if there's truck breakdowns or we're going to be late, we have the ability to send out those notifications as well."

Garbage and blue bin recycling collection will continue every week through the winter.

Grimm also addressed concerns on social media that the bi-weekly organics pickup will mean pumpkins sit at houses for up to two weeks.

"Starting tomorrow, we will have a pumpkin bin at the recycle depot and it'll be on site until next Thursday, November 9. If you really don't want your pumpkin sitting in your organics for a potential two week collection, there is another option here at the recycle depot."
