The endorsement of the 'No gang colors' program in March has given some local establishments the opportunity to have more say in who can frequent their business.

City council approved the motion on March 20, allowing businesses to display a sign that says anyone wearing gang symbols or gang related clothing is not allowed on the premises.

RCMP Cpl. Curtis Peters said this piece of legislation has been around for many years but he is happy that Airdrie City Council has embraced the 'No gang colors' program.

"Any person that is involved in criminal activity that is wearing gang colors is subject to eviction from a licensed premise."

Peters said that due to our proximity to Calgary we do have a number of individuals in our city that are known to the RCMP and are associated with organized crime groups.

"Most of the people we do know and we share intelligence throughout the province and even nationally, and we're in constant communication with our partners in Calgary Police, they have the gang suppression team."

The gang suppression team from Calgary will do joint patrols with Airdrie RCMP at some of the local licensed establishments in the evening hours to help identify known individuals.
