Police in Airdrie were in the right place at the right time to help out with an unusual situation at a local school this morning (September 11).

Students and staff discovered a Great Horned Owl caught in a soccer net. (Photo Courtesy: Airdrie RCMP)"Airdrie RCMP were actually patrolling school zones in the City, and we had a member in the area of Ralph McCall School that got waved down by some staff members at the school," said Cst. Dan Martin.

Students and staff at the school had discovered a Great Horned Owl that had gotten trapped in a soccer net on the school grounds.

"The owl was alive and breathing still, but quite frustrated with its situation. It wasn't moving too much anymore and wasn't able to free itself."

Police wanted to free the bird quickly to ensure the safety of students and staff. Luckily, they were approached by someone that was able to lend a hand.

"A parent of one of the students at the school, Jennifer Landels, approached RCMP and asked if she could assist. She'd volunteered with a wildlife conservation association for several years and knew quite a bit about owls."

Landels and RCMP were able to calm the owl and free it from the netting. The owl was then packaged and transported to a veterinarian by a member of the RCMP. The owl is expected to make a full recovery.
