On Wednesday night (June 7th), Airdrie parents had a chance to learn about a program to help educate young hockey players.

Last month, Global Sports Academy announced a partnership with the Airdrie Minor Hockey Association and Airdrie's three public high schools.

Mark Maloney with Global Sports says that Airdrie is the perfect fit for the new programs.

"When we partnered with Airdrie Minor, it's a perfect fit to create a new pathway in education so young people can pursue their love of sport and hockey specifically and tie that in with academics and leadership."

Director of Operations for Airdrie Minor Hockey Stacey Carefoot is also thrilled with the new partnership as it could help keep Airdrie hockey players in the community.

"We want you to stay inside your local minor hockey association and have an elite component with that. You don't have to go away from Airdrie, away from your parents and family and friends and take part in a high level academy and get some school programming along with that."

One of the biggest initiatives of the Global Sports program is working closely with members of Airdrie's newest hockey team, the CFR Chemical Bisons.

"A component of the program creates an opportunity for all the players on that team that will be participating in Global to take the education at George Mac and integrate that into their schooling as well," says Maloney.
