The Airdrie RCMP have responded to 12 pedestrian collisions with vehicles that resulted in injuries this year.

Although one might assume that these collisions were the result of driver error, Cst. Jennifer Weedmark of the Airdrie RCMP said that's not always the case.

"Pedestrians choosing not to use a marked crosswalk or choosing to cross when it is not appropriate to do so, and distracted walking, people are on their cell phones looking down, not paying attention to their environment."

Across Alberta jurisdictions with RCMP, 159 pedestrians were involved in motor vehicle collisions with 4 individuals losing their lives.

Weedmark said that pedestrian safety is a shared responsibility between both drivers and pedestrians.

With November being pedestrian safety month, the RCMP have compiled ways for both parties to reduce their risks of injury.

For Pedestrians:

  • Increase your visibility
  • Stay alert- Avoid distractions
  • Follow traffic rules
  • Walk in safe places
  • Avoid alcohol consumption

For Drivers:

  • Follow the posted speed limit
  • Ensure you are visible with lights and proper turn signals
  • When pulling out of your driveway, ensure both ways are clear before backing up
  • Always yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk
  • Do not drive impaired
