The City Council race for the upcoming municipal election continues to heat up, with another candidate entering the fray.

Tina Petrow says that her many volunteer positions in Airdrie have given her insights into the needs in our city.

"I've got to see the struggles that are encountered by organizations in the city, by families in the city, and they need a voice that can bring them to Council. They need a mediation person between them, and I feel that I can be a very strong voice to represent the younger demographic that we have in this city."

Petrow believes that her six years working as the owner of an events planning company, Fuel Creative, has supplied her with skills that will help her if she is elected to council.

"Through that I got to work with a lot of committees, got to chair a lot of committee meetings. Kept them on task, kept them running fairly smoothly and pulled out some great events working with all the different partners with the events."

Petrow was also the operations manager for a network of companies in Calgary for fourteen years, which has afforded her the opportunity to coordinate between government agencies, organizations, individuals and businesses. She believes this is also a valuable skill that lends her to the position of Councillor.

Petrow said she is not campaigning on simply one or two issues. Rather, she believes that a holistic approach is necessary. One main pillar of her campaign will be long term planning to accommodate rapid growth, something she feels is currently lacking.

"We've been doing a good job playing catch up, but we're not doing long term planning. We need to be able to assess our ten year goals, our fifteen year goals and actually stick to those."

Specifically, Petrow believes that means building more recreational centres and revitalizing the library. She believes making Airdrie a tourist friendly city will generate revenue.

Petrow is also passionate about creating educational opportunities for individuals and families in Airdrie. She believes that education on nutrition, financial stress management and mental health will benefit the community. She wants to see financial structures that allow community organizations to offer those opportunities to residents.

If elected, Petrow will also push for urban agriculture projects, and funding for social programs and cultural activities.
