Both the Airdrie Fire Department (AFD) and Airdrie RCMP were called out yesterday (April 13) evening to reports of a pickup truck colliding with a vehicle parked in a residential driveway and setting off a series of damaging collisions.

It happened around 7:12 pm on the 200 block of Reunion Boulevard in Airdrie.  Airdrie Deputy Fire Chief Garth Rabel says when fire crews reached the scene they found a pickup had left the roadway and collided with the rear of the parked vehicle.

"That vehicle was then pushed violently into the front corner of the attached garage, at which time the truck then careened off, crashed through the closed garage overhead door, before striking and badly damaging another vehicle that was parked inside."

According to Rabel, a second vehicle inside the garage also received minor damage in the incident.

Before the fire crews arrived the pickup driver had self-extricated and was assessed by Alberta Health Service paramedics on scene.  The homeowners were in the house when the incident occurred and, although very startled, they weren't injured.

Rabel explains that some specially trained members of the AFD were called on to assess the damage to the garage.

"Prior to going into the garage, our firefighters, who are also trained in technical rescue, ensured that the building was structurally sound. Once it was deemed safe, they took the garage door off and made their way in to see what the extent of the damage was."

The vehicles were removed from inside the garage at that point.

The Airdrie RCMP were also on scene and are conducting an investigation into the collision.
