A plane crash near Didsbury late last night (Jan 17th) left the town without power.

A witness to the incident called Didsbury RCMP to inform them of a plane flying low that came into contact with a power line. The witness says she saw large sparks and heard a loud boom.

The aircraft involved, a Piper model PA28-180 was found at the Didsbury Airport where it had safely landed following the collision. The plane sustained minor damage including a broken windshield.

Early investigation suggests that the pilot was approaching the runway to land and flew under the power lines, causing the lines to come into contact with the propeller, windshield, wing and tail. The pilot and lone occupant of the aircraft was not injured.

The town of Didsbury was left without power for close to four hours until Fortis crews were able to restore it.

The investigation into the cause of this incident has now been turned over to the Transportation Safety Board.
