A patrol of a local school zone led to the discovery of an impaired driver on Monday afternoon (January 8th).

Cpl. Curtis Peters of the Airdrie RCMP says that at around 2:00 on that afternoon, officers on that patrol found a driver going 54km in the school zone.

"They pulled the vehicle over and spoke to the driver. They detected the smell of alcohol coming from the driver's breath and entered into an impaired driving investigation. Ultimately the driver ended up providing breath samples that showed they were in excess of the legal limit."

The name of the 29 year old man is not being released as he is awaiting a court date for his charges to be sworn in.

Cpl. Peters says this incident serves as a reminder to why they carry out these patrols.

"This is a reminder of the reasons why we're doing these patrols and making these efforts. Impaired driving is a risk to public safety, it's a risk to kids, it's a risk to pedestrians and other drivers."

Police did not say which school zone the impaired driver was found in.
