The area around the Airdrie RCMP building is once again safe after a possible explosive device was successfully removed last night (Friday).

At around 3:20 pm, the RCMP sent out a release asking the public to stay away from the detachment until they could deal with a possible explosive device that was driven to the RCMP building by a citizen who believed it to be a grenade and brought it to the detachment to be disposed of because he didn't know what else to do with it.

The device was left in the vehicle at the detachment.  Airdrie RCMP contacted the Explosives Disposal Unit in Edmonton who came down and successfully removed the device from the vehicle.  The road around the detachment reopened just before 7:00 pm.

The RCMP are thanking the public for their patience in the matter.
