It was one year ago that Alberta and the world watched the town of Fort McMurray flee from a devastating fire.

The blaze, known now as 'The Beast' forced over 80,000 residents of the town and surrounding areas from their homes.

One year later, Premier Rachel Notley spoke on the resiliency that the town and the Province showed in the midst of disaster.

"We also remember how firefighters, first responders, neighbours, friends, evacuees and volunteers showed the world what it means to be an Albertan. We showed the world that even under extreme pressure, facing extreme danger, Albertans look out for one another."

Premier Notley was joined by Fort McMurray Mayor Melissa Blake who says she's still encouraged by the Provincial and National support.

"We're filled with gratitude for every seemingly small gesture that was made when we were forced to flee our homes. Most of us left with practically nothing and in true Canadian style, we were met with open hearts and open homes."

Both Blake and Notley agrees that although the fire is past and the town is rebuilding, recovery is still ongoing both physically and mentally.
