October's municipal election might feel a long way off, but it's drawing steadily closer.

Yesterday, Status of Women Minister Stephanie McLean held a press conference to encourage women to run in the upcoming municipal elections around the province.

"By running, you are making it possible for other women to see themselves in their local government, to know that someone understands their concerns and is working to make their life better."

The Province has released the 'Ready for Her' guide, which aims to help women through the election process with tips. From 2004 to 2013, only one woman has run for every three men in Alberta's municipal elections.

Airdrie MLA Angela Pitt explains why she thinks it's important for women to get involved in politics at the local level.

"Fifty percent of the population are women, so we should certainly be encouraging equal representation in that manner. But I think above all else, and I think many women in Airdrie would agree with me on this, that we're really looking for qualified people in these positions, and we have a tonne of qualified women in this community."

Currently, eight candidates in Airdrie have declared their intention to run for Mayor or City Council. Fifty percent of the candidates in each race are women. Pitt has this message for those women, and any others thinking of running.

"My advice would just be keep your head up, be brave, be strong. Remember that young girls are watching you and it's important to do your best job. This is a role that's extremely important."

Nomination day for the municipal election is September 18, and nomination papers won't be accepted by the City until that time.
