Today is St. Patrick's Day, and students at Ralph McCall are celebrating in a unique way.

The school will hold a spirit day, and the students are encouraged to wear green, eat green, and go green. Besides participating in the tradition of dressing up in green, students had a special presentation on recycling.

"We thought it would be a great opportunity to tie the new recycling program in, with the City," said Karla Patzer at the school, "So the City is going to come out to explain the blue bin program to us."

Tracy Pagenhardt, Program Coordinator for Waste and Recycling with the City of Airdrie, was at the assembly and has done a number of similar presentations at elementary schools around Airdrie, and she finds that educating students on new programs can really drive change.

"We find the little ones are eager learners, and can help educate the family on the importance of recycling and what can and can't go in the recycling bin."

Beside the recycling presentation, Patzer said students are encouraged to bring healthy green snacks, like broccoli or apples, to further celebrate the green day.
