Over the weekend, Airdrie RCMP set up checkstops as part of National Impaired Driving Enforcement Day.

The checkstops were in place on Friday and Saturday (December 1 and 2), with a number of charges laid as a result of the stops.

"Impaired driving continues to be a leading cause of criminal death in Canada," said Cst. Matt Gervais, "We will continue to focus on impaired driving and traffic safety throughout the holiday season and we hope that people get the message to not drive under the influence."

Police were able to charge three impaired drivers, and handed out two charges under the controlled drugs and substances act. One suspended driver was charged, and one Alberta zero tolerance 30 day suspension was issued to a GDL driver as well as one immediate 72 hour roadside sanction.

Additionally, officers on patrol in the community charged three other impaired drivers.

A number of additional checkstops are planned for the rest of December.
