According to recent stats from Alberta RCMP, still is still a major concern across the province.

Police say that last year, 220,855 speeding violations were issued by Alberta RCMP and Alberta Traffic Sheriffs.

A speed limit is posted on Centre Avenue and First Street.

But it’s not those stats in particular that worry RCMP officers after another survey recently came out by the Alberta Motor Association.

According to AMA, 82% of drivers who took their survey said that speeding, especially in residential areas, is never acceptable. However, 52% of respondents said they do it anyways.

Police believe that one of the major reasons for speeding is that drivers are running late and believe that the extra few kilometres will get them to their destination quickly.

“In reality, speeding will not save you that much time,” says Superintendent of Alberta Sheriffs Traffic Operations, Rick Gardner, “The extra two minutes you might save is not worth significantly increasing your chances of a serious collision.”

RCMP say that in 2015, 1 out of every 4 fatal collisions was the result of speeding.
