RCMP are warning Airdronians to keep an eye out for old explosives.

There is a large unknown amount of degraded/deteriorated dynamite in the province from when it was easier to access.

"The legacy here in Alberta is easy access to explosives for farmers, ranchers, and miners." said Cpl. Paul Zanon, Police Explosives Technician with the RCMP.

When the dynamite deteriorates, it can form pockets of nitroglycerin crystals that become shock sensitive; this can cause them to detonate.

It is important to watch for copper detonators that were produced in Canada from 1918-1965. If exposed to moisture, the lead azide inside can cause explosive gas.

"We are hoping for family members to speak to their parents and grandparents, because they are the ones that would have bought the explosives and tucked them away." said Zanon.

If you find what you believe to be explosives, you are urged to contact the RCMP immediately.
