The winter of 2016 - 2017 seems to be never ending, but there's good news.  Relief is in sight.....at least for next week.

Environment Canada Meterologist Greg Pearce says warm air will start invading the province early next week.  "We still have arctic air over the province right now and we're still looking at temperatures today only getting to minus 15 or so for highs and the wind chills are up there in the minus 20's due to the east winds that have been blowing for the past day or two, but there is a big change coming."

Pearce says the change will begin this weekend.  "On Sunday we're looking for a high of minus 3 or 4 and then the early part of next week is when the really warm air gets here.  The arctic air will have been completely flushed out of the province and by Monday or Tuesday of next week we're looking at double digit highs for parts of southern Alberta, including the Airdrie and Calgary regions."

Pearce does say that you shouldn't break out the camping gear yet, but for the short term, things look good.  "There's a lot of snow to melt off, especially in the mountains, but it's starting to look like this change is going to persist here for a few days anyway.  We're looking at these mild conditions lasting through most of next week.  Beyond that, it's hard to tell.  Hopefully we've seen the last of the really cold stuff."

Spring officially arrives March 20th, but Pearce won't say whether spring like conditions will be here to stay.  "All I can say is over the next few days look for a dramatic change in the weather and by the early part of next week this cold snap will be a distant memory."
